Reduced Pavement or Use of Porous Paving Material
Reducing or minimizing impermeable surfaces such as pavement is another way to reduce stormwater runoff and allow water to soak into the ground. If you can’t reduce the hard surfaces you might consider installing porous paving.
If you plan to install a new driveway, sidewalk or patio look into installing bricks, flagstones, interlocking pavers, stone and bark chips, as well as new varieties of porous asphalt and concrete. These porous surfaces encourage infiltration of runoff. If possible design walkways and paths with curves and porous spaces between steppers.
Remember: The material does not need to be new, it can be recycled bricks, stone, etc. Making new concrete and brick have their own issues with greenhouse gas. So be smart and choose well.
