Building a Rain Garden

Click on each step of building a rain garden to learn more.

1. Decide where to place your garden
2. Measure your house to determine size of garden.
3. Start by creating a design
4. Choose your plants
5. Layout the shape of the garden
6. Dig a shallow depression
7. Prepare the soil
8. Time to Plant
9. Mulch the garden
10. Watering and arranging downspouts

After you’ve planted the garden water every other day for 2 weeks if it doesn’t rain until garden looks to be growing on it’s own. You probably won’t have to rain the garden during the first year beyond that time but keep an eye on it in hot days just in case. Good water techniques and maintenance is the key to a quality rain garden.

When placing your downspouts make sure a grass buffer lies about 1'-2' feet before the garden to prevent a rush of water from eroding the soil and washing out the new young plants.
